Adam, My Homeless Mate

Walking down Murray & Hay St malls in Perth, I was unsure of what would eventuate from the day, but a hint of excitement flowed through me at the prospect of all the different people, stories, and scenarios that could take place in the coming hours I was there.

Fishing through my reserves of people to photograph on the street, I decided that I wouldn't take my usual path back to the Wilson car park, and instead, I'd walk back to the car park through St. George's Terrace. As I was walking, I spotted someone out the corner of my eye, hidden in a little alcove on the street. I turned to see who it was, and in doing so I saw that it was a homeless guy. The first one I'd seen that day.

Thinking to myself that this was a prime opportunity for a photo, and not wanting to ruin the moment, I casually turned around, crossed the street, and hid behind a massive pillar. Here, I prepared my camera, and lay flat on the ground to shoot right across the street to him. Unaware of what he was doing at first, I quickly clued on that he was smoking a bong out of a Red Bull can. I had a little chuckle to myself, and kept on shooting. The first photo that I have put up is when he spotted me taking photos of him, so that is where the visual story will start for today.

After he spotted me, I cruised over to him, gave him some cash, and got talking with him. Little did I know that it was good that I was taking photos of my newly found friend. I was informed that he goes by the name Adam, and that the photos that I took of him would protect me. Especially from the witch on the wall (opposite to where we were sitting). He pointed to where the witch was, and said that she keeps going off to this side (off the wall), and then I'll be blowed! All of a sudden, she's on the side of the building across the road from us! What a tricky witch she was!

"Oh yeah?" was my reply. I mean. What else was I meant to reply to a bong-smoking, life-defending, witch-watching homeless bloke named Adam? I mean. I don't even know if his name actually was Adam. It could have been Frederick Hinkleburt the 3rd for all I know. But anyway...

So, after being informed that I was going to be safe now, I asked him if I could take some more life-protecting photos of him. He was cool with it. Almost with a hint of, "Yeah man. I get this all the time. Nothing new.."

I just played to his ego, and kept snapping away. And while I kept snapping away, he kept telling me that "this whole place is gonna go", and I'm like:

"Where?..."

I never knew such a simple question could stop someone dead in their tracks so quickly.. Not to blame him though. That witch was a pretty big distraction.. Apparently, it would be more painful if it was an atom bomb. I was so confused now, and I just agreed. You know those moments when you can't hear what the person said, and you find yourself asking that person 4, and 5 times what they said? Then you just end up saying (in a very convincing manner), "Oh Yeah!". That was one of those moments.

So, I agreed with him. "Yeah, the atom bomb man. Totally". Actually I was wrong...

I gave up. After this, I just agreed whether it was right, wrong, or could swing both ways. He was a bit of a space-cadet, but thats cool.

So anyways. That was my encounter with Adam, or Fred. Pick and Choose really..

Enjoy.
This is the one I was saying from across the road. The white is just the road way over exposed.

Well there you go. That is the story of Adam, my humble, homeless friend.
